Long lines at Tag Department on Friday, August 30, 2024

8/30/2024 12:53:00 PM

***Important Message from the Reno County Treasurer***

The lines at the Tag Department have been extremely long today, Friday, August 30, 2024. At times, we have had over 100 people in line waiting to get their tags renewed or new vehicles registered.  Fridays at the end of the month are always our busiest times. Thank you for your patience. Once again, I have two extra staff members working up front today to help keep up. We are doing our best to assist everyone.  August is a very busy month with all the M, N, and Os due for vehicle renewal.

The following information might help answer some of your questions:

• The QLess system shuts down and does not let additional customers sign in once the computer calculates we have enough people in line to keep us busy until closing.  It will show our office as closed.  Rest assured we are working hard to help those already in line.  If the computer believes we can help a few more customers later on, the line will open back up, sometimes briefly, to allow more people to sign in.

• If you accidentally miss your turn when you are called, please let our staff know within the first 30 minutes.  We can place you right back in line and you will be assisted quickly.

• Renewals can be processed online at www.ikan.ks.gov. Please have your renewal handy as you will need your license plate number or PIN number.  Save your receipt when you renew online.  The state of Kansas gives you a 10 day grace period while you await your registration sticker to arrive.

• You may also mail in your renewal.  Please mail renewals early in the month to allow time for processing as well as mailing time to and from our office.  (There is no grace period for mailed in renewals.)

• If you are a September renewal who mailed in your renewal already—keep in mind that we are giving priority to mailed in August renewals who are expiring this month.  We will process your renewal in September and mail it out to you.

• Title work will require you to visit our office in person.  Alternatively, you may fill out a vehicle power of attorney authorizing someone else to handle the transaction on your behalf.

• Title work can be processed until 4:15 pm due to the complexity and time involved.  Renewals, 60-day tags and handicap placards are processed until 4:30 pm.

Please be kind to our staff—they are working extra hard today to assist everyone as quickly as possible!

Thank you for your patience!

Sincerely,

Richele Calvert, Treasurer
