September marks National Preparedness Month, the annual campaign to remind everyone that preparing for emergencies and disasters can keep them, their families and their communities safe. Did you know your emergency plans should include friends and neighbors? Remember when thinking of the family plans there are others who can help you along the way!  Be ready and make a neighborhood plan today!

Summer is almost over, have you looked at your emergency bag?  Do you have weather appropriate clothes?  Do your shoes fit?  Do you have a new animal to add paperwork for?  Remember to include all members of the family when preparing for disaster! Did you know preparedness isn't just for disasters?  What's your plan if you misplace your driver's license?  Do you have copies of your important documents to prove ownership of your property?  Plan for the unexpected minor inconvenience so you're ready if it happens! For more details, go to

Being prepared is important for anything you are planning! Do you think about what you're going to make for meals this week?  Do you feel better after having a plan for the week in place?  Make a preparedness plan for the week too!  It's not all about shelters and batteries!  Do you have a game this week?  What do you need for that game?  Drinks, snacks, a chair?  Planning for this is preparedness too!!

If you go to the store and loose the person you're shopping with, what would you do?  Sometimes the need to quickly evacuate a place unexpectedly can be nerve wracking!  Next time you're in the store look for the exits, being aware is part of being prepared!!

Do you own a business? The process for creating a business’s preparedness plans should encompass as much as possible of what a business might need during an emergency. This includes communications planning, IT support and recovery, and continuity plans. Bringing people of all ages together to make preparedness plans is a great way to make sure your Community is prepared for emergencies.

Know what disasters and hazards could affect your Community. Make plans to get information such as emergency alerts, evacuation routes and shelter locations out to people. Help Community members create an emergency kit and a family emergency plan and encourage them practice it often.

Is this your first year at college? Are you away from home for the first time? That can be intimidating, but you can be ready for anything! Go to www.ready.gov/campus to learn more about being prepared for any kind of emergency. Know what disasters could affect your area, which could call for an evacuation and when to shelter in place. Be aware of severe weather in your area by monitoring mobile alerts and warnings. Create an emergency kit and keep it in a location that is easily accessible. Be ready and prepared before an emergency happens.
