Lt. Robert W. Johnson 1922-1980
The shelter was dedicated to the memory of Robert W. Johnson, former Lieutenant of the Hutchinson Police Department's Juvenile Division, who long recognized the need for such a facility. He loved young people enough to become involved in their problems and help them improve their lives.
Beginning Operations
The Bob Johnson Youth Shelter began operation on August 29, 1983.
Meeting the Needs of Youth
The shelter was created to meet the needs of youth in crisis. It is a non-secure, Youth Residential Center II (YRCII) which has the capabilities of helping as many as 16 youth, males and females, ranging in age from 10 to 18. Youth are placed in the Shelter to work program plans designed to fit the needs of individual youth. A majority of the youth placed in the Shelter are working toward reintegration with their families.
