Juvenile Intake & Assessment

In 1995, to comply with a new mandate from the Kansas Office of Judicial Administration, the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Office formed under the Department of Youth Services. The program was mandated to ensure that juveniles are placed in the least restrictive placement available while ensuring safety for the juvenile and the community.

Purpose of the Program

The Juvenile Intake and Assessment's purpose is to ensure that juveniles are placed in the least restrictive placement available while ensuring safety for the juvenile and the community. The program is available 24 hours per day. Through an interview process and a problem screening instrument, areas which juvenile may be experiencing problems are identified and referrals to local programs which specialize in treatment or counseling in those fields are offered. The main purpose of the program is to allow local law enforcement officers to minimize the time that they spend processing juveniles, enabling a quicker return to other community needs and official duties.
